The Kobe IS20 (model IS2036GS IS2042GS) oval glass canopy island style vent hood includes the RD0020 ductless conversion kit for use as a recirculating ceiling mount hood.
Three speed electronic touch controls, removable perforated stainless steel filter for ease of cleaning, and a high performance squirrel cage fan for up to 300 cfm (recirculating ductless operation performance).
The three speed electronic touch control fan has a quiet mode (140 cfm at 1.4 sone), medium (200 cfm at 2.8 sone), and high setting (300 cfm at 5.4 sone) with the recirculating kit installed.
Stand alone, 36 inch or 42 inch wide Kobe IS-20 stainless steel island hood features 6 round exhaust with damper, horizontal squirrel cage blower and four 20 watt halogen lights.
Please note that a 20 watt halogen light puts out 320 lumens, which is equal to a 35 watt incandescent light bulb.
When you can't run a vent pipe outside, Kobe's recirculating kit (included in this package) converts any IS-20 hood into ductless operation.
Kit directs blower exhaust out the slots in duct cover near ceiling and includes two sets of charcoal filters to help remove odor.
Please note that all Kobe hoods are metric widths rounded to inches - consult diagrams for exact sizing.

RECIRCULATING VERSION of the IS-20 island hood & DUCTLESS IN GENERAL Recirculating versions of any hood are limited in cubic feet per minute CFM exhaust power. It is the nature of the beast, where CFMs much past 450 would effectively by-pass filtration, not slowing down much to leave more grease and odor behind. Every manufacturer offers ductless versions, but if you want professional performance ... you should naturally vent the hood outside. When you are forced to install a ductless hood, pay very close attention to your installation height (30 inch off range top maximum) and CFM rating of the hood. This particular Kobe hood can only reach 300cfm, which is barely speed one for an outside venting hood. The IS20 is engineered for appearance, with a sleek glass canopy, nice stainless and four lights underneath, not its exhaust performance. The other two Kobe ceiling hoods are rated at 400cfm and 420cfm, with the IS123 sporting twin vertical turbine centrifugal blowers. Either of those two ductless ceiling hoods would be a better choice for the serious cook, with the IS123 much more professional. |

WHAT TO DO WITH SLOPED CATHEDRAL and HIGH CEILINGS It is unique to see a stainless steel duct cover extend all the way up to the face of an angled ceiling - or much past ten feet (floor to ceiling height). Cathedral sloped and tall ceilings traditionally have a wood frame 'chaseway' box that 'hangs down' for level/horizontal mounting surface for top of hood duct cover. Designers use chaseways as architectural Focus for the entire room, if not the entire house as your guests view it. Covered with stone, glass, ceiling tin, paneled or tiled, or just drywall, your vent pipe extends on through the center of the chaseway. Unless you are shooting for an industrial look, a stainless steel 'finger' unmitigated from floor to 12 foot ceiling can be an over-powering 'eye magnet'. Smaller chaseways (single 2by4 frame) are wood trimmed to match the rest of the room and/or cabinets. Do you need an economical means to extend a too-short duct cover just six inches or more? Surround the top of your duct cover with decorative wood trim, tile or molding to hide any gap. |

To help clarify IS-20 installation height detail above, there are two duct cover lengths: Regular 27-1/4" and Tall 39-1/4". The hood body with oval glass canopy has a height of 2-1/2" for a total overall hood height of 29-3/4" Regular and 41-3/4" Tall. Island hoods are normally installed 30" off range top up to about a 36" clearance. You can install any island hood farther than three feet above the range top, but it is not recommended. Aerodynamically, it will dimish its ability to function as effectively, especially on lower speeds. Regular IS-20 will hang 30" off range top with 93-1/4" mount up to 99-1/4 inch at 36" clearance. Tall IS-20 will hang 30" off range top with 105-1/4" mount up to 111-1/4 inch at 36" clearance. Location of hood mounting bracket (see installation manual) determines distance from range top, but you are not limited by the ceiling height. The wood bracing you frame out for the hood mounting bracket can be installed anywhere above ceiling inside the floor or roof joists OR anywhere below ceiling with a 2by4 wood framed chaseway, thus lowering mounting height from ceiling level. These wood framed chaseways can take many different appearances: covered with rock, glass, mirror, or tile to highlight the area and paneled or drywalled to better blend in with surroundings. Smaller chaseways (single 2by4 frame) are often simply covered with wood trim to match the rest of the room and/or cabinets.

Shipping the entire unit back for repair is the last option for Kobe, not the first and only option found with most other hood manufacturers.
